This tiny garage house began life in 1926 as a 426 square-foot studio space over a garage. The most recent owner had sealed off part of the garage and converted it into a bedroom, connected to the main house by a narrow set of houseboat stairs.
With the addition of the new bedroom the square footage was up to about 720 square feet. Almost all the furnishings perform more than one function. The benches in the dining nook store linens; little tree-trunk-style side tables can be commandeered as stools; and the living room can convert into a guest room thanks to a Murphy bed.
Outside, an unsightly concrete patio was re-vamped and a new fire pit installed. A privacy fence added the feeling of out-door living space. At the other end of the deck, just off the garage, a tiny shed was converted into a home office.
Even the bathroom was downsized. The original fixtures in the bathroom were too large for the space. A smaller toilet was installed and instead of a vanity a custom table was used. The wood and wrought iron components were salvaged from a blacksmith shop from the 1800s.
